Booster Pack EDH

Booster Pack EDH

Do you like playing EDH and cracking packs at the same time? Well, then this is the format variant for you!

Booster Pack EDH

A new EDH variant.

Rules Version 1.1

Set up for a normal EDH game.

Each player brings a single magic booster pack. Preferably, the boosters are the same(ie all play or draft or collector). For our game we chose to all have mystery booster packs.

Once you are ready to begin the first round… STOP.

At that point, each player then opens their pack. All legal/playable cards a player pulls from their pack are put into a special zone under that player’s control. Cards in this zone remain exposed/face up. This zone is called the pack zone.

The pack zone is visible to all players and all cards remain face up in that zone until played.

Each player may play a single card from the pack on their turn only

A player may spend mana as though it were any color to cast a spell from the pack zone. (the spell still retains the original color identity)

Nothing can increase or decrease the number of cards you can cast from the pack zone on your turn. For the purposes of resolving triggers, a spell cast from the pack zone is treated as if it were cast from your hand.

Cards that “tax” spell casts can apply. Example:The enchantment Chill is in play as you attempt to cast Faithless Looting from the pack zone. Though you may use any color mana to cast it, it’s still a red spell. So as you attempt to cast it, the 2 colorless added to the cost from Chill being in play still applies.

Once played, a card from the pack zone functions as a normal card for the remainder of the game. They cannot return to the pack zone by any means.

The pack zone(or cards still in the pack zone)  may not be targeted. The cards in the pack zone do not count as cards in sideboard or exile.

Cards in the pack zone do not count as cards “in hand” for any purpose.

Optional rules:

**Wanna spice this up? Randomly choose which decks each player plays before you set up.

**Allow players to cast one spell (from the pack zone) until the start of their next turn instead of once only on their turn.
